UGC App Install Tracking: The Pay-Per-Install Guide

Learn how to track installs and revenue from every UGC creator, calculate payouts, and scale an app campaign without reconciling spreadsheets.

TL;DR

Give every UGC creator a separate tracked link. When someone clicks, installs, and opens your app, the install is credited to that creator. Connect your billing provider to compare revenue as well as installs. Instally puts clicks, installs, revenue, and a creator payout ledger in one dashboard; you pay creators through your existing payment method and mark each payout as paid.

What is UGC app install tracking?

UGC app install tracking is the process of connecting an app install to the creator link that produced it. It answers four practical questions:

  • Which creator drove the install?
  • Which platform or video produced the click?
  • Did that user later generate revenue?
  • Which creators should you hire again?
Follower counts and video views cannot answer those questions. A creator can generate a large audience and very few installs, while a smaller creator can send fewer clicks that convert into more valuable users.

The simplest setup is one link per creator. If the same creator posts on several platforms, create a separate link for each platform or campaign. Clear link names such as jessica-tiktok-july make the dashboard easy to read later.

How the tracking flow works

With Instally, the flow is:

    • Create a tracked link for the creator, such as your-app.instally.io/jessica-tiktok.
    • The link sends iPhone users to the App Store and Android users to Google Play.
    • Instally records the click.
    • The user installs and opens your app.
    • The Instally SDK connects that first open to the earlier click without an IDFA or ATT prompt.
    • The dashboard credits the install to the correct link.
    • If RevenueCat, Stripe, Superwall, or Adapty is connected, later revenue appears against the same link.
That gives you a creator-level view of clicks, installs, conversion rate, and revenue. It also avoids the main limitation of ordinary campaign parameters: they do not travel through an app-store install and into the newly installed app. Our guide to why UTM parameters cannot track app installs explains the gap in more detail.

Why promo codes and store dashboards are not enough

Promo codes only record users who remember and enter the code. Codes can also be shared away from the original creator, which makes performance harder to compare. App Store and Google Play reporting is useful for totals, not a clean row for every creator link. You still need a way to connect a specific click to a first open. Spreadsheets store results but do not collect them. Someone still has to combine creator names, links, install counts, revenue, and payments.

A tracked link plus a small SDK integration closes that gap. You can then use a spreadsheet for planning rather than as the source of truth.

Choose a creator payment model

The right model depends on what the creator controls and what your app earns.

Payment modelBest fitMain trade-off
Flat fee per videoYou buy content to run yourselfThe creator has no performance incentive
Pay per installOrganic creator posts focused on volumeInstall quality can vary
Pay per paying userSubscription or paid appsResults take longer to confirm
Revenue shareApps with reliable revenue trackingTerms need to be very clear
Flat fee plus bonusEarly programs that need both certainty and upsideSlightly more administration
Do not copy a universal rate from another campaign. Start from the most you can pay while keeping acquisition cost below the value of the users you gain. Put the rate, eligible countries, measurement window, refund policy, and payout schedule in writing before content goes live.

Instally currently calculates the payout amount for each creator in a monthly ledger. You send the payment through your normal bank, PayPal, Wise, or Stripe process, then mark it paid in Instally. Automatic Stripe Connect payouts are planned, but are not part of the current workflow.

A practical launch checklist

1. Add install tracking once

Add the Instally SDK to your app and test a click-to-first-open journey on both supported stores. Confirm that a test click, install, and first open appear against the expected link.

2. Define one measurable goal

Choose the result that decides whether a creator is successful: installs, paying users, trial starts, or revenue. Do not switch the primary goal halfway through a cohort.

3. Create a separate link for each source

Use one link per creator and create additional links when you need platform- or video-level results. Do not reuse the same link for organic posts and paid boosts if you want to compare them.

4. Give creators a short brief

Include the problem the app solves, two or three possible hooks, claims they must avoid, the required call to action, and the exact link to use. Keep room for the creator's own delivery.

5. Agree on payment terms

Write down what counts as an eligible result, when the measurement window closes, and when payment is due. Give promoters access to their Instally view if you want them to see their own clicks, installs, and earnings.

6. Wait for a useful sample

Do not scale or cut a creator after a handful of clicks. Compare creators after they have enough traffic to make the difference meaningful for your app.

7. Repeat the winning pattern

Rebook creators who generate valuable installs, test new hooks with them, and look for similar creators. Stop funding posts that generate attention but no downstream result.

Metrics worth comparing

For each link, monitor:

  • Clicks
  • First opens or installs
  • Install conversion rate
  • Revenue
  • Revenue per install
  • Country and device mix
  • Creator cost, if you want to calculate cost per install or return
Here is a hypothetical example:
CreatorClicksInstallsConversionRevenue per installDecision
Creator A2,00030015%$2.40Rebook and test another hook
Creator B5,0001503%$0.70Review audience and call to action
Creator C90018020%$3.10Test with more distribution
Creator B has the most clicks, but Creator C produces more valuable users. That is why creator decisions should use installs and revenue, not reach alone.

How Instally fits into a UGC campaign

Instally is built for app developers who need to see which links drive installs and revenue. You create one link for both app stores, name it for the creator or campaign, and compare every result in one dashboard. Promoter accounts let creators see their own performance without exposing the rest of your data.

Create your first tracked creator link before sending the next brief. The link name you choose today becomes the row you compare later.

FAQ

Do I need a different link for every creator?

Yes. A separate link is what gives you a clean result for each creator. Use additional links when you also need to compare platforms, individual videos, or paid boosts.

Does this require an IDFA or ATT prompt?

No. Instally is designed to connect direct link clicks to first opens without requesting IDFA access or showing an ATT prompt.

Can creators see their own results?

Yes. Instally promoter accounts can show a creator their own link performance without giving them access to every campaign.

Does Instally pay creators automatically?

Not currently. Instally calculates the payout ledger. You pay creators through your existing method and mark the payout as paid. Automatic Stripe Connect payouts are planned.

Can I use the same creator content in paid ads?

Yes, if your agreement includes the necessary usage rights. Create a separate tracked link for the paid version so you can compare organic and paid distribution. TikTok documents the current eligibility and setup rules for Destination Links on organic videos and Spark Ads.

How quickly does a result appear?

A click appears after the link is opened. An install appears after the app's first open is connected to that click. Revenue appears after the connected billing provider sends the event.
