How to Track TikTok UGC App Installs

Track which TikTok creators, organic posts, and Spark Ads drive app installs and revenue by giving every campaign a separate tracked link.

TL;DR

Create a separate Instally link for every TikTok creator and campaign. Put that link in an eligible TikTok Destination Link, a creator's bio, or the call-to-action used by a Spark Ad. Instally records the click, connects the app's first open to that link, and shows installs and revenue by creator. Use different links for organic and paid distribution so their results do not get mixed together.

How do you track installs from a TikTok creator?

TikTok views and profile visits do not tell you which creator produced an app install. To measure the full journey, you need a link that records the click before the user reaches the app store and a small SDK that connects the later first open to that click.

The Instally flow is:

    • Create a named link such as your-app.instally.io/jessica-tiktok.
    • Give that exact link to the creator or add it to the ad call to action.
    • The link sends iOS users to the App Store and Android users to Google Play.
    • Instally records the click.
    • After the app is installed and opened, the Instally SDK connects the first open to the earlier click.
    • The dashboard shows clicks, installs, conversion rate, country, device, and connected revenue for that link.
This does not require an IDFA or ATT prompt. It also gives every creator a separate result instead of combining all TikTok traffic into one total.

Where to place the link on TikTok

Destination Links on eligible organic videos

TikTok supports Destination Links on eligible organic videos and Spark Ads. Access depends on account type, verification, region, and TikTok's current prerequisites. Review TikTok's official Destination Links overview and setup instructions before writing the creator brief.

When a creator is eligible, give them a unique Instally link for the Destination Link. Do not reuse another creator's URL.

Profile link

A profile link is the common fallback when a post cannot use a clickable Destination Link. The creator's call to action should tell viewers to use the link in their bio.

If a creator posts several videos during one campaign, you can use one bio link for the cohort or switch to a new link for each video. Video-level links give cleaner data, but they require more coordination.

Spark Ads

When an organic post is promoted as a Spark Ad, create a separate tracked link for the paid version. For example:

  • your-app.instally.io/jessica-organic
  • your-app.instally.io/jessica-spark-july
Separate links show whether the creator's audience or the paid distribution produced the install. They also prevent paid results from being credited to an organic deal by accident.

Use a clear link naming system

A simple naming pattern makes reporting easier:

creator-platform-placement-version

Examples:

  • jessica-tiktok-bio-july
  • marcus-tiktok-destination-v2
  • dana-tiktok-spark-hook-a
Use a new link whenever the answer to “which source won?” matters. Keep one link when you intentionally want a combined total.

What to compare in the dashboard

Views measure content distribution. Link metrics measure movement toward an install. Compare both, but use install and revenue data for acquisition decisions.

For each TikTok link, review:

  • Clicks
  • Installs after first open
  • Install conversion rate
  • Revenue and revenue per install
  • Country and device split
  • Creator fee and ad spend, if you want to calculate cost or return
Here is a hypothetical example:
LinkClicksInstallsConversionRevenue per installNext step
Creator A — organic1,80027015%$2.20Test a second organic hook
Creator A — Spark Ad4,5003608%$1.70Compare return with ad spend
Creator B — bio90018020%$3.00Rebook and test more reach
The biggest link is not automatically the best one. Creator B sends fewer clicks but converts a larger share into more valuable installs.

A practical TikTok creator workflow

1. Choose the campaign result

Decide whether the campaign is judged by installs, trials, paying users, or revenue. Keep that definition consistent across creators.

2. Create links before content goes live

Create one Instally link for each creator and another for each paid variation you want to compare. Send the link inside the final brief, not in a separate message that can be missed.

3. Check TikTok placement eligibility

Confirm whether the creator can use a Destination Link. If not, plan the profile-link call to action. TikTok changes product eligibility over time, so use its current documentation as the source of truth.

4. Test the full route

Open the link inside TikTok's in-app browser on both iOS and Android. Confirm that each device reaches the correct store listing and that your test first open appears against the expected Instally link.

5. Keep organic and paid results separate

If you boost a winning post, generate a new link for the ad. Record the creator fee, usage rights, and ad spend separately.

6. Wait for enough data

Do not rehire or cut a creator based on a few clicks. Let the campaign collect enough installs and revenue to make the comparison useful for your app.

7. Repeat the winning variables

When a creator works, test one change at a time: a new hook, a different demonstration, another audience, or more distribution. That gives you a better chance of learning why the result changed.

Common TikTok tracking mistakes

Using the same link for every creator. You can measure TikTok in total, but not the creators inside it. Mixing organic and Spark Ad traffic. A paid boost can make the organic post look more productive than it was. Judging by views alone. Views do not show store visits, first opens, or revenue. Changing links after launch without recording it. Name each link clearly and keep the campaign dates with it. Skipping the first-open test. A working redirect is only half the journey. Test that the installed app reports the result to the expected link.

How Instally helps

Instally gives app developers one tracked link for both app stores and connects each TikTok click to installs and revenue. Create separate rows for creators, organic posts, and paid boosts, then compare them in one dashboard. If you invite a creator as a promoter, they can see their own performance without seeing the rest of your campaigns.

Create a tracked TikTok link before the next creator posts so the first click is measured from the start.

FAQ

Can I put a clickable link in a normal TikTok caption?

Ordinary URL text and TikTok's Destination Link feature are different. Destination Link access has account and eligibility requirements. Check TikTok's current documentation and use a profile link when the feature is unavailable.

Should every video have a different link?

Use a separate link when you need video-level results. One link per creator is enough when you only need a creator-level total.

Can Instally track links opened inside TikTok's browser?

The tracked link is designed to record the click before routing the user to the correct store. Test the exact placement and route on both platforms before launching a large campaign.

When does an install appear?

After the user installs and opens the app, the SDK connects the first open to the earlier link click. Revenue appears after the connected billing provider sends the event.

Can I track TikTok Shop or LIVE placements?

Use a distinct tracked link wherever TikTok and the creator's account allow a link placement. Check the current placement rules and test the route before relying on it.

Should I use the same link for organic posts and ads?

No, not if you want to compare them. Separate links keep organic creator results and paid distribution results clear.
